Garrucha is a small coastal village situated in the East of Almería. It is well serviced by Airports in the region including Almeria,Malaga,Murcia & Alicante. The town has all the flavours of the Mediterranean Coast & was created around a fishing port, where boats fished under the protection of the "Torre de la Garrucha" ("Garrucha Tower") which was located by the sea, next to the "Alfolí" (Salt store), where today we can find the Town Hall.
Being traditionally a fishing village, Garrucha was called "the small San Sebastián". Today, Garrucha is a thriving traditional Spanish fishing town with lots of cafe bars, restaurants & shops. Take a stroll around the port in the evening & you might come back with your supper. The local fishing boats leave the harbour in the morning and return that evening between 17:00 and 18:30, they unload their catch and auction it off in the fish market to the local fish restaurants. It is fantastic to see this happening and you are welcome to wander around the auction as it happens.
Every Friday (unless there is a fiesta) there is a very big market that runs along two parallel streets of about 500m each. If you like to explore the region, there are some interesting day trips, heading 6km south you will find the seaside town and village of Mojacar, heading into the mountains the town of Turre & then back to the coast to Carboneras. Another option is to take a route north to Vera where you will find the Parque El Palmeral & bull ring/museum (plaza de toros), continue north to Aguilas & enjoy amazing views of the coast along the high winding mountain road, if you feel more adventerous continue to the north where you find Cartagena the major naval sea port where you can enjoy a deserved meal amid the baroque & neo-classical buildings.
