Alcolea (739 mt above sea level, town area 72 sq km, local people known as Alcoleanos)
Alcolea is situated approx 68km west from the capital, Almeria. The village is approached via A348 from either Berja or Laujar de Andarax, between the Sierra Nevada and Sierra de Gádor. From this road there are impressive views across the valley
Alcolea is a small hillside town surrounded by olive groves, which produces one of its main crops, others being almonds and green beans; The town’s Moorish inheritance is remembered in the typical white, flat roofed houses clinging to the hill slopes where the Alpujarra area runs into the Sierra Nevada. Currently (2003) Alcolea has less than 900 inhabitants, (20% of whom are under 20 & 25% over 65.) although the population is increasing by a small percentage each year. The local Padron (local register) shows only a very few foreigners as living in the village.
There is a small restaurante Sol Y Luna, located in ,Carretera, 16, 04480 Alcolea Tlf.: 950513211 which has an excellent reputation. They serve the tasty seasoned olives for which the town is well known and excellent Menu del dia 7.50€ per person. In the summer they have a large open air swimming pool available. on the main road, opposite the restaurant you can visit one of the local Olive Oil presses.
The local church was built at the start of the 18th century, and features an unusually shaped octagonal roof to the tower, the church square has an attractive garden & fountain, while a further local Fuentes can be found close by
