If a tranquil place exists within this tranquil province of Almeria, Benitagla must be it.  A difficult marriage is taking place between progress and peace in this town and it looks like it will end in divorce.  The good news is that its looking likely that peace will get custody of Benitagla and progress will carry o­n elsewhere.

Perched o­n the mountain range of the Filabres, it shows off a curious title, that of being the o­nly town in Spain (that’s to say: there might be other, although not many) without a single bar!  Granted, the deaf old man in the Pensioners Social Club, might find a refreshment for you from somewhere behind an eery door, please don’t expect a huge variety of tapas.

Benitagla, of white houses and grey tile roofs, small and beautiful, looking as though it was crouched over the bank having a siesta if admired from behind.  Sounds silly, but that’s what the locals claim.

The aim of all the inhaitants of Benitagla is to uphold their motto, "to live far away of the worldly noise" by staying put and they certainly seem to be true to their word.

It was the Benitagla of the silk, the Benitagla that lost its pulse (as so many other towns of Almeria and of Andalusia did) after that civil war against the Moors and that has been known to conserve the deeper beauty, the simplicity that deepens in time adding to the culture and custom.  The towers of its old farmstead of Alhabia, an enigma of square form (and therefore of Moorish culture) although built of Stonework (and therefore of Christian culture).

In the middle of an intense but dominable natural space, of those that rests the mind but they do not tire too much the traveler that wants to enjoy an easy walk.Benitagla can give the traveller the chance to forge with nature with many activities of rural tourism.

Country retreats are the future of the town.Already, a few houses have been reformed to accommodate executive retreats.  This is a great activity of the future, something that more and more people seek.
