Casa de Becque nestles in the heart of the Sierra Cabrera mountains, in a hamlet of about 7 houses, in the province of Almeria, southern Spain, 3 km from the small village of Cabrera, which has a wealth of Moroccan-style architecture, with an abundance of minarets and Moorish arches. We are 10 minutes from the village of Turre, which has a very good supermarket, a Friday street market, selling locally grown fruit and vegetables, flowers, and plants, along with all the usual souvenirs, clothes, beachwear etc. It also has many bars and restaurants to suit every pocket! We are 15 minutes from the popular town of Mojacar, which is famed for its charming hillside setting, quaint narrow streets, and Moorish archways, which date back to about 1450. Mojacar also has miles of sandy beaches and some very good beach bars. We are 45 minutes from Almeria airport, and two and a quarter hours from Alicante airport, and can arrange transport from either. Almeria airport handles flights from Gatwick, Manchester, and Birmingham. Murcia airport is just over an hour away, using the new AP7 motorway, and handles many international flights too.
Casa de Becque stands amidst stunning mountain scenery, and the silence is only broken by the sound of goat bells in the valley below, and the birdsong. The local flora and fauna includes poppies, iris, wild herbs, and mimosa in the Spring. Being on the migration route from Africa to northern Europe, there is a multitude of bird species including black wheatears, Sardinian warblers, redstarts, pied flycatchers, little egrets, booted eagles, swifts, swallows, martins, hoopoes, red-legged partridge, nightjars, larks, bee-eaters, hawks, owls, and ibis, many of which are permanent residents. Tortoises are indigenous to this part of Spain and in the valley below live wild boar and foxes. on the short drive from the motorway, you will pass herb farms, see the shepherds with their flocks of sheep and goats, travel through orange and lemon groves and see olive, almond, and fig trees growing.
In the past 2 years, the house has been sympathetically renovated, and we can now offer 3 double or twin bedrooms, all with private bathrooms, and completely self-contained. Two rooms have french windows opening onto a charming terrace, complete with comfy sofa, cane furniture, grapevine, and jasmine, wisteria, passionflowers, and other semi-tropical flowers. The other bedroom has a romantic terrace of its own, with cane furniture, grapevine, semi-tropical plants, and stunning views.
The room rates (per room per night) are as follows.....(FOR BOOKING OF 4 NIGHTS OR MORE DEDUCT 10%)
- March €50
- April/May €55
- June €60
- July/August €65
- September/October €60
WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN THE AREA
Casa de Becque has its own swimming pool, for the exclusive use of guests, and a share, with our immediate neighbours, in a tennis court within walking distance. There is golf at Cortijo Grande, and riding, both ten minutes away, and also quad-biking and go-karting nearby. The immediate area is perfect for bird-watching, photography, painting, and walking. A 15 minute drive takes you to the fishing port of Garrucha, which has many shops, a bustling street market, a daily fish auction, and marvellous open-air fish restaurants. We are less than an hour's drive of the charming, totally unspoilt seaside village of Agua Amarga, with fishing boats pulled up onto the beach, the Wild West film studios at Tabernas, the cave houses at Cuevas, the interesting town of Sorbas, with its caves, and the historic city of Almeria, with its ancient port, castle, Moorish quarter, and shops and street markets. Just over an hour away is Lorca, also of interest to historians. We are also only a two hour drive from Granada and the Alhambra. There is so much to see and do, as well as lazing round the pool with a jug of sangria or a large gin and tonic!
THE BEST TIME TO COME
Easter is one of the loveliest times of the year, with good weather, but not too hot. The mimosa and wild flowers are in bloom, and the Easter celebrations and processions are spectacular.
The beginning of June sees Cabrera festival, with a giant paella, demonstrations of horseriding skills, and fantastic music and fireworks.
The second week in June is the Moors and Christians festival, with 3 days of spectacular merry-making, ending with a magnificent procession on the Sunday evening.
The first week in October is Turre Fiesta, with a fairground taking up a greater part of the main street, many interesting activities, music, and of course a fabulous firework display.
Throughout the Spring, Summer, and Autumn, there are many local Fiestas and celebrations.
