Spectrum Mojacar News and Gossip Wednesday with Beachcomber John on 20th April 2011.
A couple got robbed by 4 laughing muggers somewhere in between the Los Atalayones complex and the Subway area last weekend, I donít know the exact location. They ran passed the couple laughing and snatched the ladies hand bag. They would have got a shock on opening the bag because it had a lot more money in than they were probably expecting. The couple had just arrived on a long stay holiday.
People from officialdom (Public performance license) have been going round Mojacar telling bars they have to pay for putting music and showing Tv programs. The cost of this is from Ä40 a month quoted to Los Amigos to Ä150 for the Irish Rover, presumably all plus IVA. My TVs will be going in the bin!
GB Stores Mojacar is about to close (As told last week) and are about to do a 30% off sale.
See photo of how it will look in a few days before it no doubt turns into another Chinese Bazaar (Alledgedly)
GB Stores Albox will also close at the end of this month and are as of today offering 20% off most of their stock. I believe Albox are not closing because of lack of business or profit but from the consequences of the Mojacar store having to close.
Alboxís British store, Eurowise, will be moving to larger premises in May and they will obviously pick up some of GBís trade as will pricebusters.
I told you last week about the Indalo Hotel closing for May and June but Iím hearing the closure could be longer and the hotel may only open for six weeks this summer. A lack of bookings is the problem. The problem as I see it is customers booked into the hotel havenít been informed yet and I think its unlikely that they will and will be moved to hotels near Garrucha and worse still for us here in Mojacar in Roquettas de Mar.
Los Arcos on the beachside has changed its name to Ankara. I did hear about 6 weeks ago it was changing hands.
Badgers Keith is retiring next week and son Lewis is moving back to take over the restaurant. Enjoy your retirement Keith and no doubt you will be trying to get your golf handicap down. Good luck also to Lewis in his new role as boss.
The sky dive charity event in June is now to share the proceeds between Paws and Macs as so many people are doing it, 15 I think.
Also last week I told you about Turre police making people get a license before painting their wreckers and walls well listen to this.
Picture the scene.
A customer of the Beachcomber has a 40 foot wall outside his house and needed to replace 16 feet of it because it was falling down. But the work was stopped by the town hall because of a law thatís been in force since 1987.
If you replace a wall on any road behind Mojacar playa you must rebuild it 8 metres from the road and not 6 metres as it is now.
He now has a 16 foot parking bay in front of his house.
He also had to endure the cost to Galasa of moving the water metre and paying for the tarmac to be laid. Only in Mojacar eh?
You can see why the people of Madrid have a nasty name for the Mojacar locals cant you?
Ryanair are to trial reserved seating from 6th May. A £10.00 charge for choosing a seat in rows 1 and 2 or 16 and 17 (I think with extra legroom) Obviously these passengers will also have priority boarding PLUS and in front of the now less important speedy boarders who will still have to fight and run for their favourite seats but of course they will now have less choice and their previously preferred seats will no longer be available.
Disabled passengers will carry on being put on last at the back of the plane and have to take their chances that their carers can sit with them.
The new bar near Yvis is called La Esquina de Julio or ĎJulioís Cornerí I believe it translates to. I had heard the owner of Cafe O was opening it but donít know if thatís true.
Le Bistro Restaurant near Galas and Arriba has reopened after shutting for the winter. Itís Ashley the singers girlfriendís mum and dad that run it, I didnít know that!
Talking about shutting for the winter, I see the 24 hour supermarket next to Truffy Bar has reopened. Not 24 hour yet though, not that it ever has been!
I told you a couple of weeks ago I expected the old Activa formally Euronicís shop to become a Chinese Bazaar, well its open. It has the same owners as the Susana Chinese bazaar near the Parador Hotel. I asked the owner when he was opening shop number three and he doesnít know! (GB maybe?)
The Beachcomber has come up with a twist to its Sunday roast menu, a freshly cooked giant toad in the hole roast dinner. Because itís cooked freshly for you it does need to be pre-ordered on such a busy day.
Talking about the Beachcomber our Tribute to Rock and roll night is this Friday and the main tributes will be to Elvis, Eddie Cochran and Neil Diamond with other songs from the same era from groups and singers such as: Buddy Holly, The Kinks, Chuck Berry and The Beatles.
Eat all you like three course meal and entertainment for only Ä15.00.
Icelandís electric shock problem from their trolleys should be fixed by now; they have been tying bits of wire to the trolleys to earth them.
British journalist were being shown around Corvera Airport last week by representatives of Jet 2. There are lots of rumours that Ryanair are going to move their Alicante hub there next spring and this certainly would be good for us down here but it is only gossip.
I also heard from a customer that has a relative working in San Javia airport and he says Ryanair are going for that airport as their Hub from next year. He says Ryanair are having lots of meetings with the airport officials.
Budget airline Bmibaby is to halt its operations from Cardiff Airport from this autumn, that means it wonít be flying into Alicante from there.
It said it would be redeploying aircraft to Northern Ireland and the Midlands so letís hope some will come our way.
The airline has announced seven new routes from George Best Belfast City Airport including flights to Malaga & Alicante.
PC City is to close its shops; this company is the Spanish version of PC World and is owned by Dixons.
A big loss to Spain in jobs, 30 odd shops and well over 1300 staff if I remember correctly.
Most of the things they sell can be bought up to 30% cheaper from the likes of Amazon and delivered to Spain.
This summer is going to be a particularly dry one apparently and we have to worry about the fires of course so if you have untidy gardens around your property get them sorted. I do know of an English digger driver if anyone needs to contact him.
Juan is leaving the kitchen at Bar Alvaron and John the owner is looking for someone else to take over the kitchen at the end of April. John wants Ä150 a month which will cover the electric and water etc and they can then take all the money for food sold. Call in and see John, The Alvaron is pretty much opposite the Continental Hotel.
Mojacaronline Mojacar needs all local musicians in the Mojacar area who are prepared to play 3 or 4 numbers to help PAWS, to contact them as soon as possible through http//:www.mojacaronline.com
They only want a little of your time. The event will be held the first weekend in October.
There will be a Beach Cricket tournament on this Easter Sunday in front of Fantasia from 10am.
Titoís Beach Bar will be hosting a Fashion Show Event this Saturday 23rd. There is a raffle in aid of PAWS so if you have something to add to the raffle please let Carmel Langdon or Tito know.
Betty Swallocks will be strutting her stuff in Bar Med on Saturday night then every Saturday I believe during the summer.

The old Gourmet Restaurant in The Square has now opened up as Pezkaito especializado en pescado frito. Looks bright and cheerful on the inside and a little roomier. Menu has a traditional Spanish feel to it. Closed Mondays, open 1pm to 4pm and 8pm to 11pm other days. Call 670 662 425 for reservations
The new cafe in Darsena 3 owned by Restaurante Nautilus will be called Gula, which means gluttony in Spanish. One of the seven deadly sins it is meant to symbolise the sheer pleasure and decadence to be obtained from enjoying high quality food. As for the opening date ÖÖ next week, will confirm as soon as it is known.
I agree,..although somehow I can't see Keith completely bowing out !!!! ,................Lewis is a good guy, he was basically in charge years ago!!,...although it was his Mum who was the real boss !!!!! _________________ "If your Parent's didn't have any children the chances are you won't either!!!".
I think you're right there Ejay -- Keith will find it difficult to leave it alone.....but Lewis has probably grown up alot over the last few years (what with one thing or another) and I'm sure he will tell Dad where to go if he interferes too much! _________________ Low lie the fields of Athenry
