Only just seen this post....
We run totally off solar (3 bed cortijo). We have 2 systems set up:
1) direct 12v - 2 x 60w panels and 2 x 250amph batteries. From this we run the lighting. We have exchanged all of our light bulbs to SMD's (similar to lcd) as they are ver low power.
2) inverter - 2 x 60w panels and 2 x 250 amph batteries and a 2000w inverter. We take great care when choosing items to run on this - low wattage - but we manage to use TV/satellite, drills, microwave, computer, hairdryer, vacuum etc - although not all at the same time!!!
We currently have a gas fridge, but will install a solar powered fridge on a standalone system when we need to renew.
We also have a couple of generators for extra power if needed. We run the washing machine from the generator.
Living from solar power makes you very concious of the power you are using - you don't leave lights on unnecessarily and don't have anything on standby!
Power is in abundance during the summer - more than we could use, however, in the winter 3 cloudy days and our supply does start to dwindle - but we do have a very small solar system.
solar power is great, and worth the investment, but you do have to change your living habits to suit.
