Just about to get the state pension - and wondered if it would be worth getting it taxed in Spain?
Was a government employee - so can't have that taxed in Spain - but wondered if it would be better to have the state pension taxed here - or would it just be more trouble than it's worth???

Sorry I may have not made myself clear in my previous post. The State Pension is taxable but, unlike company pensions, it's paid to you without tax being taken off so you need to tell your Tax Office you're getting it.

Hi, your UK pension is taxed, the reason that you don't see any deductions is because the personal allowance is set against it.

As I understand it, if you are liable for tax in Spain then they will want to tax you on your world-wide income. They don't care if it's a private or state pension or dividends on shares or bank interests or "earnings" - they tax you on the lump-sum lot. If you pay any kind of tax in the UK you should get a tax voucher which you can deduct from what you have to pay here (the double tax imposition rulings between EU countries).

Or you can shut up about it and hope it takes a long time for them to get their act together!

Cheers

This is a late reply, Tillymint, but perhaps you will read it.

I am in exactly the same position as you, my work pension is a government pension which can only be taxed in the UK. I spoke to someone in my local HMCR office in UK who advised that I have my state pension taxed in Spain while my occupational pension is (has to be) taxed in UK. That way, he said, you get both allowances.

I posted this a long time ago - but I've just had some new posts - so thought I'd let you know that I've managed to get my state pension taxed here in Spain - and the tax man in the uk sent me some money that they'd taken off me - so that was a good result. I've done my tax returns here in Spain and declared any savings etc in the uk - so I think I'm up to date on that - but hey - who knows out here - in general - the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing - paperwork is not their strong point - but they do like to try and fine you for this and that - so I suppose we'll all have to wait and see???
