Just been reading all the posts about moving to Spain. We've lived here for over 7 years and are in our early 60's - however, we've had access the medical care here - and although it is wonderful and we're very happy with our care - the travelling back and too to hospitals has prooved very tiring.
Often we travel between 1-2 hours to see specialists - then back to get results - and often have to take an interpreter. If we were in the U.K. - the hospitals would be closer by. We are not getting any younger - and health issues are always going to be a worry - we know folk who have to travel to Granada - and then need to stop in hotels to be near the hospital. More added expense - which as pensioners - is not easy!!
Much as we love living here - we feel we need to think about moving to somewhere that is nearer to medical care - possibly the U.K. Which we really don't want to do!!!
Yes same thing when parents were living in Devon. They had to visit a specialist in Plymouth and lived in Sidmouth, was just under 2 hours to get there and then 2 more hours to get back plus a few hours waiting around...often stayed overnight in Plymouth as otherwise it was a long day. In fact most people in Devon are sent to Plymouth. On the South coast a lot of specialists are in London (St Thomas, Guys, Royal Marsden) which is even worse.

I,too, have breathing problems,but I cant wait to move to Almeria.I do not need my puffers as much when I am in Almeria.The air in the UK is full of damp spores for most of the year,except for a few months in the Summer.The dry air of Spain is much healthier.After 2 or 3 days in Spain I don't need my inhalers,and can walk up and down hills without getting out of breath.
Here in the North west of the UK ,today,we are forecast 100 mph by tonight.It is getting very bad now,and we expect a power cut soon.I don't look forward to doing my round as a Home Support worker tonight.Just hope I can breathe ! This weather is getting worse each year here.It certainly is bad for older peopleI look forward to next year,when I am definitely moving over.The NHS is not getting any better for old people either.They move them about from A and E to home and back again,because they don't know how to cope with them-it is bad.

Complete opposite for my wife, last October in Spain she could not breath or eat properly , we think due to the temperature being the highest for 25 years [ Murcia papers ] and our flat is on the beach, lounge running at about 75% humidity [UK 40% ] , here in east London this winter has been great 10f [5c] warmer than normal , in fact had NO winter at all so far , went from autumn straight into March wind's and April showers [ downpours ], my gas central heating bill is running at about Ģ2-50 a day half its normal price
LOL I was just saying to some people today that I wasn't surprised that the usual suspects from the UK who always claim the weather is as good in the UK as in Spain had disappeared from the forums.
I get involved in some other forums and this guy used to come on to a topic about moving to Spain and say without a hint of irony that the weather was so much better in the UK than Spain over Winter. An heroic figure from Almunecar challenged the man to a day to day comparison. A picture at 12noon from outside their houses, every day and post it on to the forum. Lets just say that after 2 weeks it was extremely embarrassing for the guy from the UK. Whilst the Almunecar pictures had people in shorts and t-shirts, blue skies for 8 of the 14 days, it also had 6 days of cloudy skies and some rain (although in a few people were still in t-shirts. The UK guy had 3 days of blue skies but 8 days of grey heavy skies and rain, 3 days just grey with every one with people in big coats, scarfs etc.
You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to realise that the weather is so much better in Spain than the UK. It isn't so much about temperature, although it is statistically a lot warmer in Spain, it is almost without fail to do with hours of sunshine. The problem with the UK is that although it may be 5c warmer it has been incredibly grey this Winter and unbelievably wet (damp). If you suffer from arthritis this isn't good. If you suffer from depression it isn't good.
Spain hasn't had a great Winter but it has been fairly dry and the hours of sunshine are almost quadruple the UK.
I find it hard to comprehend that anyone from the UK can say with a straight face that this Winter the weather has been reasonable. Wettest Winter since records began, highest winds, lowest hours of sunshine etc

The weather here in the North West has been vile.Certainly it has been warmer,but it has been so wet.I could count the dry days on one hand,you get really sick of it.I was doing my round last night in 100 mph winds.I had to try different ways of getting in and out of the car,and I am not soft,but I was scared.At one point,I was sitting in the car and the wind was rolling it from side to side,I really thought it was going to flip over.But as my clients need help with meds.and going to bed,I had no option but to go out there!
Certainly,you might have a different opinion on the Weather if you don't have to go out in it at night;I am just sick of getting soaked every night.
We seem lucky our rain tends to come at night, I can tell by the small lake by our driveway

It just seemed like a strange thing to say when the press are saying it is the Worst Winter in Decades, Worst storms since records began, most rainfall ever in January, least hours of sunshine. Even wearing the most rose tinted spectacles I wouldn't say "this Winter has been great" !!
When talking about health I would put my neck on the line and say that avoiding damp and dark climates is probably best, even if the temperature isn't too bad.
A nice dry and sunny environment is going to be best for you every time even if it does get chilly at night. This may not be the case for your wife but probably is for the majority of people.
By the way I live in the UK and have spent the Winter in the UK because I have had to. Spain has many many faults but one thing that you can say with 100% certainty (stats going back hundreds of year back it up) is that it does have better weather than the UK (apart from late July & August when it is probably more comfortable temp wise in the UK).
I agree with you though Pottsy when you say that the heating bills are lower this Winter in the UK but literally since Mid December It has been utterly grey & miserable (I'm in Sussex)
Yes its definitely warmer but last year 70mm of rain, this year close to 200mm for Jan/Feb. Also worth noting gusts of 88Km/h yesterday !!
Interestingly type in Garrucha and you'll see this coming week its touching 21degrees in day, 12 at night.
So even if we do forget about the roof damaging gusts and the record levels of rainfall I'd still prefer 21 degrees in Spain over 10 degrees in UK
TV is better in the UK now though There is also a lot more to do in the UK when it does rain. I personally would prefer to spend my Winter in the UK (It is far too quiet for me in Spain in Winter). If I could choose a perfect Winter combo though it would be Spain's weather but in the UK.
