I am due to visit Almeria shortly and view property . Can any one tell me the official line re Palomares.
An article in the Sunday Mail May 11 described the accident in 1966 and that there are still areas that cannot be entered.
When thinking of viewing property in the village which I have visited a few times and have liked I find this off putting
I new the history of this incident and when it occurred but had not realised that there was still some contamination.
Can anyone help me
Well it is a political situation. The area itself has been closely monitored by US, Spanish and Independent medical teams and researchers since 1966. These teams of people have been literally giving medical checks every year to local children and looking for any abnormalities or signs of adverse medical reaction, contamination of blood etc. Surprisingly the results show that life expectancy is higher and cases of cancer are lower than average. This was explained as being possibly down to increased scrutiny (the fact that things are picked up earlier in this community). The general medical consensus is that it shows no effect whatsoever, absolute ZERO. They did find in 5% of people that their were small traces of plutonium in their bone which could be attributed to other causes. I think they generally don't report that in your average sample in your average town in the UK around 3-4% will have some level of plutonium in bone samples anyway.
Now this neutral rather boring outcome is not very newsworthy is it. It also gives no diplomatic advantage for Spain over the US. It is no secret that the Spanish have been using the Palomares incident as a "dig in the ribs" to the US when partaking in diplomacy with them in the past 40 odd years.
So starting around 10 years ago the Spanish authorities paid a small fortune for scientists to dig around the area and sample the soil and calculate contamination. They unsurprisingly found high levels of plutonium but again this is in areas that had already been marked out and was not in use. This has given Spain another reason to bring this up in recent economic negotiations with the US. It is being used as a political hot potato. It is a complete NON story in terms of real life facts but is very useful for people looking to write sensationalist headlines that attract attention and for those looking to embarrass the US into agreeing to diplomatic/economic help.
Basically this is a non story but of course it will put off people who do not do their own basic research. Just to put this in perspective, in Cornwall the amount of Uranium and as a result Radon Gas is much more dangerous than any plutonium you will find in Palomares. Radon Gas is the 2nd biggest cause of Lung Cancer after smoking and Cornwall is teeming in it. You are unlikely to see a story in the Daily Mail about this. Why? Because most of the Daily Mail journalists have 2nd homes there and it is also so minimal (although not as minimal as Palomares) that it isn't really a story.
So my advice to you Ian is ignore this rubbish, take a look at the area and see for yourself. The Vera Naturist resort has been occupied since the 70's, people in Palomares have just the one head !! and look at Desert Springs, do you think somebody as successful, wealthy and wise as Steven Hitchens and the Hitchens group would be pumping hundreds of millions into the area without doing basic research into this?
Ah glad to see some common sense prevailing. Very good and acurate information. You got more chance of receiving a radiation dose if you live in Cornwall. Take a look in the village, see the old people there.
