Is it a legal requirement in Spain, for a company that does work for you to give you a receipt? I recently had some building work done by a British company in Spain and despite many requests for a receipt, they have not provided one.

In order to reduce capital gains tax when I finally sell my house, should I be asking for a Factura or a Recibo? And what do I do if the company continue to ignore my request?

You will not be able to claim for 'building work' as an expense against capital gains tax unless it was carried out with a building licence and is subject of an escritura de obra nueva.

Otherwise you can only add expenses of the purchase to the original price and deduct expenses of the sale from the sale price.

If you cannot obtain your invoice you can report the company at your local OMIC office or, if you suspect the income from the work has not been declared, you can make a report to AEAT using this form:

http://www.agenciatributaria.es/static_files/AEAT/Contenidos_Comunes/La_Agencia_Tributaria/Denuncia_Tributaria/denuncia.pdf

If you have a digital signature you can do this online.
