I have put a posting on 'Car Hire Flights and Airports'. As we own and are regular visitors and have regular repeat guests in our apartment in Roquetas I was wondering if anyone cares to give their view on my rant. I feel not everyone can travel exact Thursdays to Thursdays etc and it has hit my regular guests hard as not everyone drives in Spain so Malaga and Murcia are not that acceptable. I just don't get the ideology of the area and with the current climate it should be pulling out all the stops to get people into Almeria/Roquetas. Willing to listen to all sides of the situation.

The economic situation across Europe and especially in Spain has resulted in mass unemployment in Spain. This has now officially reached 20% but I have it on good authority that it is nearer 30% in the Andalucia region. We came to Roquetas five times last year and will be returning next week but each time we come over we see the signs of a declining economy.

We often drive from Malaga as the flights are so cheap and unless we can get more competition from other airlines, then flying into Almeria, is proving rather expensive.

Many years ago Almeria airport was forced on the locals to be used for tourist not the airforce base as it was , and the locals have resented it ever since, I can se it closing down in the near future

It dosen't seem that long ago that the only flights you could get into Almeria were on a Thursday (also Sundays in the height of the season). Hence Thursdays are still known to many people as "change over day"

I remember those days as well. I remember walking from the aircraft at Almeria and getting your luggage within 15 minutes.

I have posted the reply from Monarch regarding my enquiry as to why the Manchester to Almeria flights have been cancelled for 2012 on another Forum topic but will re-post here below as it certainly affects people in this area more,
It may help reading the first internal e-mail, if as many people as possible complained direct on their website,
Just a thought

Sue

Thank you for your email

Due to Fuel cost, handling charges and consumer spending sentiment, we had to revaluate all commercial performances for Summer 2012. Unfortunately, Manchester to Almeria was one of our worst commercial performers.

If our fleet grows for Summer 2013 there could be a possibility of a reintroduction, but reduced program from Manchester to Almeria.

Kind regards

Hi do you also remember your photo taken as you get off the plane, getting your luggage from outside and on return going to wait for the plane in the garden.

Remember it well but not the photo bit, once the plane arrived from the UK late in the afternoon , when we took off about 8pm, as the plane left the ground ALL the airport lights went OFF; god help us if we had to return back as the airport just vanished, about 1988 that was

Thanks for the memory

1982 was the first time we flew into Almeria and it was then and possibly a couple of years after, that as you left the plane your photo was taken and displayed for you to buy on return.

If you saw more then one plane you thought you had won the jackpot.

Like you we remember the lights going out it was as if they were saying. "Thank god they've gone".

Ryanair are expanding fast to Almeria (Three UK destinations as of now) and so as they are strengthening themselves at Manchester that could be next, John.

P.S. I've had a tip off Luton to Almeria with Ryanair is a possibility, they are looking at it............

If Ryanair can make it pay why can't Monarch. I remember the old airport sitting up on the terrace watching your plane come into land etc and the change over day was Thursday. However they did get rid of a lot of the Plastics and geared up for tourism. So why they don't now want it after spending a fortune trying to promote it and then letting it fester. I love Almeria for it's non big commercialism and still the Spanishy aspect but now they are completely turning its back on a large percentage of it's potential growth without becoming a Benidorm or Fuengarola.
