Hi all,

Can someone tell me why second hand cars seem to be so expensive?

I saw an advert last week for a 2006 Focus estate diesel for sale near Mojacar at around €5000, the same car in the UK is around £1500-£2000.

When the time is right off me to buy a car I am considering buying a lhd car in the UK and bringing it over, then get the plates changed.

I realise there's a cost to this option but are there any other reasons off not doing it?

I believe that there are two factors as to why secondhand cars are more expensive in Spain:-

1) New cars are more expensive (generally due to higher taxes). This pulls up the prices of secondhand ones

2) Cars (and their parts) last a lot longer here. The dryer climate and lack of salt on the roads (esp. in the south) means that cars last a lot longer. The lack of traffic (less slowing down, breaking and changing gear) can reduce wear on parts as well.

The third factor is less competition about a thousand showrooms to about two in Spain [ tongue in cheek }

Cars certainly last longer here. I have two oldies. A 13 year old Ford Focus and a Citroen Berlingo that is not far short of its 20th birthday. Both get through their respective ITV's with little problem - they'd have been scrapped in the UK by now!

My Berlingo is 13 years old from new , no rust but all the other things on it are a pain , advance soliniod in the first year [Citroen could not fix it } second year heater blower [made in Spain] dead replaced it from breakers yard for £30 [£230 from Citroen} 10th year screen washer pump packed up, wiper motor only works on full seed so I fitted a power transistor to slow down the speed , a month ago drivers side electric window packed up luckily the window is closed so will sort out in the summer if I still have it
Next motor I get will if I have my way have NO electrics fitted just lights preferably gas !
