This Sunday May 25th, it's voting day in Spain for the European elections. If you don't vote, abstention helps the two main parties the PP and PSOE (both famous for their corruption, if not much else).
There are 39 choices (for all tastes), including an anti-corruption party called 'Partido X'. _________________ www.theentertaineronline.com
The chance would have been nice. Several people on Agua Nueva in Turre found themselves disenfranchised. Somebody in their wisdom had removed us all from the padron, although we are all still on the bit that gets the money in though. We went to the polling station with NIE and driving licences and copies of padron but were turned away. It feels as if they were trying to prevent a Brit vote but I may be getting paranoid.
People later tell you what you should have done but unless you know at the time it is not much use. The main criticism is that we do not spend our lives in the townhall complaining about things but not all of us have spent our lives living like that and it does not occur to us to do that. I have only been here 10 years though and clearly not learnt how to live her yet.
Hi Sonya, I don't know if Agua Nueva is legal and so on, but when a European gets on the town hall padrón, they fill out a form to ask for the right to vote in municipal and European elections (we can't vote in regional and national ones). The Town Hall will sometimes strike Europeans off the padrón after five years unless they find out / are told different (the confusion in the Telegraph about the 90,000 Brits who had suddenly left Spain comes from this).
It will be worth asking to check that you are on the padrón and can vote in the municipal elections next May 2015.
If Agua Nueva isn't legal or recognised, you have an interesting story for our friends at The Telegraph! _________________ www.theentertaineronline.com
Agua Nueva is totally legal. I have voted every time since 2004 and so have the other people involved. My last padron was admittedly dated 2012 but the problem is that if they want us to register every year then somebody needs to tell us. They also need to tell us why suddenly those of us who do use our vote were stopped from doing so this time. I am going to the townhall this morning and will be interested to hear their reasoning.
