Velefique was a noticeable town in the Islam religion, refuge in the 10^th Century of the Jarichí sect, that was fleeing from Cordoba, who marked the life of the town and its beliefs; cradle, in the middle of the 12^th Century, of o­ne of the most representative personalities of the Islam faith, the poet Sidi Abuh Ishaq Ibrahim, Abu Salin.  This poet along his 108 years of life wrote about twenty works, among them a history of Almeria.

This cultural reference joins with the beauty of the ruins of the old settlement which was in its day a Moorish Citadel, and the parish church that after years of ruinous state, after being burnt by the Moors, was restored.
