Pool Water Testing and Treatment
Some pool maintenance companies only carry out minimal testing of pool water, which is insufficient to determine the correct treatment of the water to ensure it is safe to swim in.
Maintaining swimming pool water that is safe and hygienic for swimming requires several aspects of the pool water to be regularly tested. The results of these tests determine if more chlorine needs to be added or chemicals to change the PH are required. Some of the tests we carry out on pool water are.
Free Chlorine
Total Chlorine
Combined Chlorine
PH
Total Alkalinity
Cyanuric acid
TDS
Balanced Water Test
To ensure safe pool water the level of free chlorine needs to be compared to the level of combined chorine in the water. It is only by looking at these two tests can we determine if the chlorine in the water is doing its job of destroying potentially harmful micro-organisms. Some pool maintenance companies only test for free chlorine.
The PH level of pool water is also critical for safe swimming. The range that is required is 7.2 to 7.8. There are two main reasons for this. The first is that if it goes above or below this it will be too alkali or too acid and this will irate skin or possibly cause burning in extreme conditions. The second reason is that the PH levels change the effectiveness of the chlorine in the water to destroy harmful micro-organisms. If the PH gets too high the chlorine in the water becomes less effective, so it is better to keep the PH close to the bottom of the range.
Backwashing Filter
When the pressure gauges on the filter indicate that the filter needs cleaning the filter will be backwashed. Backwashing the filter involves running water through the filter backwards and down a drain to remove dirt from the filter. The water is run through the filter until the water going down the drain runs clear. The pool level will then need to be topped up as Backwashing can use a considerable amount of water.
