On the outskirts of Roquetas, on the way to the Gran Plaza shopping centre is the newly opened aquarium. This state of the art, 3000 m² aquarium uses over 2 million litres of water, making it the largest aquarium in the province. The different aquatic zones are beautifully presented and range from tropical freshwater and tropical marine, to the open ocean and a 1 million litre main tank, housing numerous sharks and other marine species. There is a touch pool in the aquarium where the public are invited to stroke the wings of one of the many rays or guitar fish (they’re soft and velvety) as they are swimming around. This is quite safe and should be given a go. The variety of species is impressive and they all looked very healthy and well cared for. The staff all seem very friendly and well-informed, some speaking English as well as Spanish. All signs and information are in various languages, including English and German.
Surrounding the main tank is an 80-seat auditorium where one can attend lectures and shark-feeding displays, or just sit and watch these graceful animals in this well recreated habitat.
Various special services are offered by the aquarium, but the best of these has to be the shark diving. This is for experienced, certified divers ONLY. A diving instructor specialising in shark diving will guide you through the dive and will monitor you during your time in the main tank. The price is €160.50 and includes entry into the aquarium, all diving equipment and insurance. More information at biología@aquariumroquetas.com
There is a gift shop and café at the aquarium where one can buy snacks and hot and cold drinks either before or after your visit.
