The Farmhouse of the Friar (El Cortijo del Fraile) was made famous for the tragedy that immortalized the poet Federico Garcia Lorca (in his Blood Wedding play) and Carmen of Burgos (in her Carnations Dagger novel): a real life story that happened at the beginning of the 20th century and that was known in the press as "the crime of Nijar".

Celebrating a wedding of convenience, so normal in that era, between Paca Cañadas, who lived in the cortijo and Casimiro Pérez, the tragedy took place o­n the night of the wedding, when the true love of Paca, her own cousin, Paco Montes, abducted her o­n his horse and galloped away, whilst a brother of Casimiro who had found out what had happened and intercepted them at a croosroads and shot Paco trying thus to clean the honour of his brother who had been betrayed.

You may find The Farmhouse of the Friar if you turn right at Fernan Perez, coming from Campohermoso and follow the road to Albaricoques. There, you turn left at the crossroads and go along the dirt track for a couple of kilometres and there you will find the Farmhouse of the Friar.
